How It Works

The RO treatment train

A well-engineered RO system is far more than a membrane rack. Pre-treatment protects membranes; post-treatment conditions the permeate; monitoring ensures consistent quality and membrane longevity.

01

Feed Water Pre-treatment

Multimedia filtration removes suspended solids and turbidity that would foul the RO membranes. Iron and manganese are oxidised and filtered where required. A 5-micron cartridge filter is the final barrier before the high-pressure pump.

02

Antiscalant Dosing

Antiscalant chemicals prevent scaling of calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, and silica on membrane surfaces. Dosing rate is calculated from the feed water Langelier Saturation Index and system recovery ratio.

03

High-Pressure Pumping

A high-pressure pump drives the feed water through the RO membrane elements at pressures of 5–15 bar (brackish water) or 50–80 bar (seawater). Energy recovery devices reduce power consumption on large systems.

04

Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Semi-permeable polyamide membranes reject dissolved salts, heavy metals, bacteria, and organic molecules. The permeate (pure water) passes through; the concentrate (brine) is managed or reused.

05

Post-treatment Conditioning

RO permeate is slightly acidic and aggressive. pH adjustment (lime or CO₂ dosing) and remineralisation restore stability for potable use. For industrial use, conductivity is verified against the process specification.

06

CIP System & Monitoring

Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems restore membrane performance by circulating acid or caustic cleaning solutions. Online TDS, conductivity, and flow monitoring detect membrane degradation early and alert the operator.

Applications

Where RO is the right solution

Pharmaceutical GMP

Purified Water (PW) and Water for Injection (WFI) grade production meeting WHO-GMP and Bangladesh Medicines Directorate requirements.

Food & Beverage

Process water for bottling, ingredient mixing, and CIP cleaning where consistent TDS and microbial quality are non-negotiable.

Electronics Manufacturing

Ultra-pure water for semiconductor and electronics cleaning processes where ionic contamination causes product failure.

Boiler Feed Water

Demineralised water for steam boilers prevents scale formation and corrosion, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Dialysis Water

RO systems certified to AAMI/ISO 13959 standards for haemodialysis water quality in hospitals and dialysis clinics.

Textile Process Water

Soft, low-TDS water for dyeing and finishing lines reduces chemical consumption and improves colour consistency.

Why Hydro Engineering Solutions

System design that protects your membrane investment

Feed water analysis first

We characterise your source water fully before designing the pre-treatment train — the most common cause of premature membrane failure is pre-treatment undersized for the actual feed water chemistry.

Recovery optimisation

We model recovery ratios against your feed water scaling indices to maximise water production while preventing scaling and fouling — balancing water efficiency with membrane longevity.

CIP-ready design

Every system is designed with a CIP circuit integrated from the outset — not retrofitted. This means membrane cleaning is practical and routine, not an emergency procedure.

Remote monitoring integration

Online TDS, conductivity, flow, and pressure monitoring can be integrated with our SCADA offering so your quality team sees real-time RO performance from any device.
